Commissioner Gilberto J. Alexander chairs the Commission's Programs & Access Committee and has worked tirelessly towards the promotion of social justice and equal opportunities for immigrants in the United States. A gifted artist and native of Barcelona, Venezuela, Alexander moved to the U.S. in 1974, after living abroad in Germany. His first job in San Francisco was working at the Goethe Institute, where he assisted German nationals and other recent immigrants with Library Services. Commissioner Alexander’s other career achievements range from working in social services and educational programs for immigrant residents at the Queens Bridge Houses in New York to his current position as a public health expert for the City and County of San Francisco. Commissioner Alexander possesses valuable experience and insight for improving the quality of life for all immigrant communities.
